Rapier, c. 1600-25. Iron and steel | 99.5 cm (length) | The English hilt encrusted and overlaid with silver and gold; the blade Solingen, c.1600-25 etched and gilded. Engraved in Latin: 'He who strikes with the sword, dies by the sword and He to whom nature has denied strength, gains his ends through craft'. By tradition belonged to Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740); purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales before 1806. -Royal Collection Trust-
