Armchair | John Linnell, 1754. London. Beechwood frame, gilt and japanned, with traces of red paint below; modern upholstery. The form of this chair with its rectilinear back and arms filled with Chinese fretwork remained popular until the 1770s. Thomas Chippendale included designs for Chinese chairs in his Director, first published in 1754.
