The Brown Berets. The meaning of Chicano Power is rooted in the civil rights movement. In the 60s Chicanos and Blacks marched the streets shouting Chicano Power and Black Power. They sought to challenge the status quo and build power within their communities. Chicano Power therefore means the continuance of seeking freedom, prosperity, and peace for Chicano people.

The Brown Berets were known for their direct action against police brutality. They protested killings and abuses perpetrated by the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department at the station in the barrio.
