Guyot. Tens of thousands of years ago this volcanic desert in the Danakil Depression, north Ethiopia, was a branch of the Red Sea. Today the area is exposed, revealing several of these guyots (extinct, submarine volcanic craters). Their hollows fill with water during the rare rainfalls, and the green coloring is probably caused by algae. G

This beautiful stratovolcano lies on the Rift Valley, a cliff-like scrap running from Djibouti to Mosambique. Sand dunes, Sossusvlei, Namib-Naukluft National Park, Namibia
Featured Place: Kolmanskop, Namibia
Kolmanskop, a ghost town in the desert of southern Namibia, Africa. In the 1900s, diamonds were discovered just sitting upon the sand, waiting to be found, so people from all over the world with diamond fever flocked there. After the First World War when diamonds sales dropped, the sand-clearing squad failed to show up. Kolmanskop turned into a ghost town being buried by sand and trapped in time.
