Spending so much time in Finnmark, it's appropriate to post a picture of a knife tradition from the very north of Norway: the Walrus-knife. And you guessed it – made from the tooth of a walrus. These knives was popular in the late 1800s, and though the knife maker here is unknown, the silver work was done by Severin Dalbye in Tromsø around 1900. It's even said that the great explorers Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen both carved walrus knives when out and about in their boats. This detailed work is hard to capture in a photo. This one is a cooperation-knife made by the craftsmen and artists Halvor Teigen (1818–1910), who made the sheath, and Talleiv Nystog (1832–1910), who made the knife handle. Both men from the knife county of Telemark. Handling this blade probably gives most of us a sense of awe :) Telemark, Teigen, Knife Handles, Knife Making, Craftsman, Nordic, Blade

Gunnar Omdal (1919–1984), one of the great knife maker legends from Telemark county, made this knife in bone, steel and silver. It's said to be one of his favorite knives. And I can only agree. The art and craftsmanship is of another world. ⚒❤⚒ Great Knife, Dagger Knife, Pocket Knife, Agree, Bones

It's been a while since the last traditional norwegian knife, but this one is a gem. Produced by the belgian Jean Edmund deConinck in Oslo, but made by a unknown norwegian knife maker, though a very fine wood carver, sometime in the 1800s. These type of knives is known as «city knives», meant for gentlemen in the big cities. The tradition for city knives in Norway is longe gone now. ⚒❤⚒ Types Of Knives, Wood Carver, Oslo, Belgian, Unknown, Cities, Maker

The highly decorative masur birch, cut and ready to be made into traditional Norwegian knife handles. A drop of water on the wood disclose the different patterns in the fibers, of course how you cut the wood also affect how the pattern occur. Truly beautiful and no wonder this is a favorite wood in Norwegian folk art and hand craft. Have you ever seen half a «football» growing out of a birch trunk? It could be gold like this! ⚒❤⚒ Bushcraft Camping, Different Patterns, Make It Simple, Birch, Folk Art, Wonder, Drop

Finding a few minutes to do my favorite activity, whittling a minkepinne or in english: a diminishing stick. Just whittling a small stick until its gone. No more. No less. Just a perfect activity. Actually this was for my upcoming book on Norwegian traditional knives – so work and pleasure combined. The book should be out in a few weeks. 🌲💚🌲 Upcoming Books, Video Image, Whittling, Pleasure, The Book, The Outsiders

The 85 year old blacksmith Bergland is showing his finished blade made the traditional Norwegian way with hardened steel laminated between softer steel. I took this blade to another knife maker for a upcoming book on Norwegian knives – the result is stunning and soon ready for sharing. ⚒❤⚒ Bergland, Instagram Sign, Hardened Steel, Blacksmithing

Norwegians used to put knives in baby beds to protect the children from trolls. There was a belief that trolls would come at night and change the human baby for a troll baby – such children was called «byttinger» or maybe «the changed ones» in english. But the steel in knives protected the children, as trolls are afraid of steel. I saw this crib under a knife photo session – so here you would be truly safe among some of the most exclusive old Norwegian blades of them all. This is a special Norwegian knife – made by Aasmund Hovden (1876-1952). Steel, silver and leather, and both the acanthus silver engraving and leather work, pauted acanthus, is a sight to be remembered. Hovden did not make many knives, but the ones he made is highly treasured. This knife is also exhibited in Telemark, Norway. A great thanks to Vest-Telemark Museum for letting me study and photograph some of their most valuable knives! ⚒❤⚒ Silver Engraving, Acanthus, Leather Working

This is a great example of a traditional knife from Gjerstad in Norway. Knives have a special meaning here, and have been made for so long, that the official coat of arms of the litte municipality actually is a row of three Norwegian knives. If you look close at this blade, made by Finn Valle, you can see the lamination of hard steel in the middle and softer steel around, almost like an small crack near the edge. The rest of the knife, with its super acanthus work, is made by Nils Valle. Special Meaning, Knife Sheath, Lapland, Custom Knives, Knifes, Coat Of Arms

If ever I saw a well used knife! This Norwegian tool was made in Trysil by an unknown maker at an unknown time, but it sure wasn't yesterday. Laminated steel and birch in both handle and sheath – a tradition often seen around Finnskogen and not unknown to people from Finland. Well used blades also has it values, perfect for finer work like woodcarving! Regular historic knife updates from Norway on Insta :) Trysil, Woodcarving, Jonas, Wood Crafts, Yesterday
