Ai Weiwei, "81 Wooden Balls". 2012. Installation of wooden polyhedrons, each of them constructed using the joining methods of traditional Chinese furniture without use of paste or staples. The shapes are based on Da Vinci´s polyhedral sketches, and they are modeled after a plastic toy belonging to his son. Ai Weiwei led his workshop through two years of experimentation before finally completing this complex, minimalistic installation using lost crafting techniques.
