Each stair is 8" high, and the footprint of the entire staircase is 3'x3'. This gives a total height of 5'4"... a bit hard to explain, but the next step will be up to a landing area with a closet for our clothes. The landing plus the stairs would span the width of the house (82"). Then, entry into the main loft with bed. The landing area would have a low ceiling underneath it, so there will be a utility room under it (to hold our climbing gear, etc), accessible from the outside.

Each of the open spaces would be storage -- drawers, or triangular areas opening from the top. I haven't shown the closures just to make things clear. There's also an area for hanging clothes. No space is wasted in the interior of the stairs.
