John Glover House, Marblehead was the home of fisherman, merchant and Revolutionary War General John Glover. His schooner, Hannah, was the first of many privateers authorized by General Washington to raid British shipping. His seafaring men manned the boats during Washington's Crossing of the Delaware and the Continental Army's evacuation after losing the Battle of Long Island. On September 1, 1774, General Gage sent 260 men to seize the province’s gunpowder from the Powder House (Nathan Tuft's Park) in Somerville, MA. Although the redcoats encountered no resistance, a rumor began that the soldiers had killed some colonists. The next day, thousands gathered at Cambridge Common, leaving their firearms outside of town but pointedly carrying sticks, chasing a customs officer back to Boston.
