iCivics. This on-line game, part of a civics site founded by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, really tests users' understanding of Constitutional rights. Students defend clients in court and score points for their successes. This can be played on individual computers in the classroom or on a single computer with smart board or projector. Also included are teaching materials and lesson plans for civics-related topics ranging from budgets to civil rights.
July 7: On this day in 1981, President Reagan nominated Sandra Day O’Connor to be the first woman to serve on the Supreme Court. She served until Jan. 31, 2006, when she retired to spend more time with her husband, who had Alzheimer’s. After retiring, O’Connor founded iCivics to provide young Americans the knowledge to participate in democracy and has filled in as as substitute federal appellate judge.
