Inspired by swords found in Chertsey, England, and Copenhagen, Denmark, Vince Evans's interpretation of a 10th-century Viking sword includes a composite pattern-welded blade, blued-steel guard and pommel with silver wire inlay.
Æthelflæd - warrior queen of Mercia, the old name for my ancestral homeland of the West Midlands. She presided over the victory of The Battle of Tettenhall in AD 910, sometimes referred to as The Battle of Wōdnesfeld - now known as Wednesfield. Both of these areas are within the city of Wolverhampton, itself an ancient settlement formulated from the Anglo Saxon words 'Wulfruna' and 'Heantun'. Many a strong, fiery and fearless lady comes from West Mercia... she is a spirit I behold.
Æthelflæd (d. 918) - Æthelflæd, Lady of the Mercians, was the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great, king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex, and his queen, Ealhswith. She was born at the height of the Viking invasions of England. Her father married her to Æthelred, Lord of the Mercians, also known as 'Æthelred, Ealdorman of Mercia'. After his death in 911 she ruled Mercia, until her own death in 918. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle referred to her as the Myrcna hlæfdige, 'Lady of the Mercians'.
Rollo - Wikipedia
Rollo (c. 846 – c. 931), baptised Robert[1] and so sometimes numbered Robert I to distinguish him from his descendants, was a Norse nobleman of Norwegian or Danish descent and founder and first ruler of the Viking principality which soon became known as Normandy. His descendants were the Dukes of Normandy, and by later extension, the King of England.
Viking traders and explorers - BBC Bitesize
Leif Ericson was born in Iceland around 975. He was the son of Eric the Red, who started the first European settlement of Greenland in 985. One story says that while he was in Norway, he may have become a Christian. King Olaf I of Norway wanted Leif to go back to Greenland and teach the Vikings there about Christianity. As Leif was sailing back to Greenland, he was blown off course and he ended up in North America instead of Greenland.
