*WWII PIN ~ honoring Pearl Harbor hero Dorie Miller, a black messman who was untrained in machine gun use due to rigid Naval segregation policies. Miller took over a machine gun aboard the USS West Virginia and was officially credited with downing two Japanese planes. He was honored as one of the first heroes of World War II, and six months after the attack was given the Navy Cross by Admiral Chester Nimitz.

On December 7th, 1941 at 7:55 am, the Japanese attacked military airfields and Pearl Harbour with 181 torpedo dropping planes, dive bombers, horizontal bombers and fighters. Overall, twenty-one ships of the U.S. Pacific fleet were damaged and the death toll reached 2,350, along with 68 civilians and 1,178 injured.

Chief Petty Officer Edward Wartzleff was one of only 335 survivors of the USS Arizona which sunk after exploding during the attack on Pearl Harbor, Dec. 7, 1941. 1177 crew members perished. Mr. Wartzleff died on Sept. 10, 2013 at the age of 96.
