The Ordinary Adventures of a Primary Chorister

Our song for June is The Fourth Article of Faith. The children did so well last week learning it, so I am only going to have them sing through it once or twice this week. Afterwards we will be working on our Father's Day Sacrament Meeting presentation song, Teach Me to Walk in the Light. I have decided to ask the Bishopric to sing the second verse for the Father's Day Sacrament Meeting performance. *cough-cough* I'll let you know how that goes. LOL *Update* The Bishop said YES! YeeHaw! (I am…

Singing time: Sing like....

This one is going to be an ongoing project, but here's the first 6. Now basically the idea is to put these onto popsicle sticks, pull them out of a hat, etc for kids to sing in fun ways so it never gets boring. I do have a LONG list of fun ideas and I'll be making up cards for them in time, so if you have a fun way to sing, shoot me an email or comment below and I'll add them to the list :) They are all the same size about 4.5 in (I made them on a transparent 5 in square and they are all…

Some Primary Chorister Ideas

So, I don't remember if I mentioned this, but I got released as secretary for primary and instead am now the CHORISTER! I've only done it two weeks, but I have to say, it's probably already my favorite calling ever. Less planning than when we were teachers, more interacting with the kids than activity days or secretary, less stress than any sort of leadership position, and yet I still get to be in primary, singing and moving with children as they learn the songs and hymns that will likely be…

Tutorial - "Title Toss" for Program Songs

I wanted to do a “Title Toss” to review all of our program songs, but I didn’t want the poster to look like my other one. So I decided to do it by hand and in color. I thought I would take pictures in case anyone is interested in the process. After my daughter saw the finished poster she commented that it was a little weird that we were singing "Hinges" and "Once There Was a Snowman" in the program. I just laughed and assured her that those were rest songs, not intended for the program! BTW…

Teaching Method - Exploded Flipchart

An exploded flipchart is essentially a flipchart, just stop before you have it all put together. Collect a blank sheet of paper for each phrase you want to illustrate. Find a picture or draw an illustration for each phrase. Make a word strip with a key word or word-group for each phrase also. Put thin magnets on the back of each piece. When you are ready teach, post the pieces randomly on the chalkboard. (You could explain that the flipchart exploded in your bag!) Ask the children for their…

Pass the Parcel Singing Time

PREP RATING: 3 ACTIVITY: PASS THE PARCEL Hi Ya'll!! Happy Friday! I am prepping for a 50 minute Singing time this week. I will be doing my S'more Singing activity that is on my blog, however, I am going to change it up a bit and add in a Pass the Parcel game. You all know the one, right? A treat or small prize is wrapped in multiple layers of wrap. When the music stops whoever has the parcel removes a layer of wrap and play continues until all layers have been removed. For Singing time, I…

Primary Singing Time

Sometimes it's so hard to choose which child should be selected to help or to pick a song. Last night I was at our local Lakeshore Learning (it was 10.95 for a package of 36 sticks) store and I picked up these wooden sticks in the shape of boys and girls. I had each child in the primary color one in to represent themself. They wrote their name on the stick part and we put them in a box (I'll make a garden out of foam for them for later). During singing time all I had to do was choose a…

Children's Singing Time Game: Tic Tac Toe!

I was in charge of our Primary Singing time at church a few weeks ago and decided to play a simple game of tic-tac-toe to help us practice a song. It was so easy to put together, the kids had fun, and we got a good practice on one of my favorite songs! Supplies: Construction paper in Red and Blue Scissors Tape Chalk Prep Work: Draw an X on a piece of red construction paper. Cut it out and trace 5 more onto more red paper. Draw an O on a piece of blue construction paper and do the same thing…

I forgot to post this and it has been sitting in my drafts, I thought of it today and here it is…. One of my favorite music times was when I tied quite a few Hershey candy bars with a string and note. Each note had a clue on it, as to whom it should be delivered to. I talked with the kids about how many different people and responsibilities needed to be filled to have our church run smoothly. I would then call a team of two with a member of the Primary presidency to find the person described…
