The Heroes from 'Sui-ko-den' The biggest influence on the Japanese tattoo is one Chinese novel written in 13th-15th century, 'Sui-ko-den' (水滸伝: The Water Margin; Shui Hu Zhuan). Those characters had devastatingly attractive tattoos on them. And that arose a big tattoo boom among urban commoners.
