Ffern | Artisan Eau De Parfum on Instagram: "Vermeer blue • Summer 23 ⁠ ⁠ For Summer 23, our moodboard was filled with paintings by Vermeer - and though they are suffused with the umbers and greys that characterise most paintings from the seventeenth century, the colour that really springs out from them is blue. ⁠ ⁠ The most popular blue paint at the time was azurite - but Vermeer preferred the transparent brilliance of ultramarine. Ultramarine was made with hand-mulled lapis lazuli, making it costly and laborious to produce. Only a fine and experienced craftsman could mix it correctly, and even once that was mastered it was difficult to paint with, having a stringy quality that resisted brushing out evenly.⁠ ⁠ The labour and financial costs of ultramarine were offset by the incredible rad
Ffern | Artisan Eau De Parfum on Instagram: "Iris • Autumn 23⁠ ⁠ Now is the time to plant bearded iris - in anticipation of a decadent froth of ruffs (the outer petals) and falls (the inner) come spring. ⁠Bearded iris are named for the hairs growing along their falls.⁠ ⁠ Iris are often given a dedicated bed, for their knobbly rhizomes need to see the sun to flower at their best. They should always be planted in full sun and shelter, in well-drained earth. If planting rhizomes, soak them before you put them in and water in well. After three years, divide the rhizomes to prevent overcrowding. ⁠ ⁠ If you have iris already, now is the time to trim them back to about 15cm - the sword-like foliage is evergreen, but will likely need a bit of a tidy.
