Q: I discovered these things in my garden and am wondering if you can tell me what they are? I believe the grayish color ones are older, and the pinkish/salmon colored ones are fresh. A: It’s wolf milk slime mold. It is an amoebazoa, not a fungus or mold. This organism is common on hardwood

Wolf's Milk Slime (Lycogala epidendrum). The bright pink immature reproductive phase of a slime mold, forming fruiting bodies in a cluster between the shelves of a bracket fungi. Upon maturing, the spheres or cushions (aethalia) will turn brown or gray before releasing spores. Sometimes called "Toothpaste Slime", because the substance that oozes out of the immature aethalium bears a resemblence to pink toothpaste.
