My name is TreeGirl and I love trees. I have spent the last twenty years photographing myself intertwined with some of the world’s most amazing trees. As an arborist and artist, I research and travel to each of the trees, spending anywhere from a few minutes to hours naked in wild nature to create a great shot using a remote-control timer and a tripod.

© Daniel Dietrich The lure and magic of wildlife and nature images tempts many photographers to jump into the field. However, it’s not nearly as easy as many aspiring pros think or hope. The all-important “look before you leap” challenges to this photo field can be considerable and the start-up time longer than the usual commercial photography business.

National Geographic has just announced the results of the prestigious 2016 Nature Photographer of the Year contest. As you can see from the pictures below, the judges had a hard time choosing the very best image but the first place along with a 10-day trip for two to the Galapagos Islands, two 15-minute image portfolio reviews with organisation's photo editors and a $2,500 cash prize went to Greg Lecoeur for a superb shot of predators hunting sardines underwater.
