Many people may think that the ancient Greeks indulged themselves in the good life: they drank lots of wine, cherished the sun and the sea, and participated in wild Dionysian festivals.  To the contrary, Greeks regarded overindulgent people as possible traitors who might put their appetites before their loyalty to the state. Important virtues included: style, grace, eloquence and self control. So, the Greeks looked down on conspicuous consumption and lack of self-control.
