Gorillas are critically endangered. Currently the gorilla is considered to have three subspecies: the western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla), the eastern lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla graueri) and the mountain gorilla (Gorilla gorilla beringei). Presumably, the species was once more widely distributed, becoming differentiated when localized populations were separated from each other. Now the small, scattered populations are seriously endangered by increasing human populations…
