Promoted as “the 154-acre ‘shopping heart’ of Lakewood” (260 acres if the parking lots were included), Lakewood Center was enormous and growing. Every few months through 1954 another grand opening was announced with special sections in local newspapers.

Called “the 154-acre ‘shopping heart’ of Lakewood” (265 acres if the parking lot acreage was included), Lakewood Center was a city in itself, or as Joe Eichenbaum called it, a “shopping city.” Although Lakewood Center was planned with the automobile in mind, the mall was specifically designed to cater to pedestrian shoppers.
