The European honey buzzard (Pernis apivorus), also known as the pern or common pern, is a species of bird of prey in the Accipitridae family. Despite its English name, this species is more closely related to kites of the genera Leptodon and Chondrohierax than to true buzzards in Buteo. The binomen is due to Linné, derived from περνης, an Aristotelian term for a bird of prey, and Latin apivorus "bee-eating" (although bees are much less important than wasps in the bird's diet). The…

Pernis ptilorhynchus, Crested Honey Buzzard. A large raptor of lowland and montane broadleaf and mixed forests, breeding in Siberia and Japan, wintering in Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is also year-round resident in these latter areas where it inhabits tropical forests from lowlands up into montane areas. It is known to congregate in large flocks of up to thousands during migration. It raids wasp and bee nests, although it prefers bee and wasp larvae over their honey.

Kanha National Park, India Oriental or Crested Honey Buzzards are commonly found in the woodlands in India. They are closer to kites but have distinguishing features like long neck and short head like pigeons. They rely mainly on the larvae and nests of wasps.
