The Painstorm WODs are a series of workouts that became popular after they were shared in the CrossFit Forum, typically with Credit to Brand X CrossFit and CrossFit Central Scotland. "Painstorm XIX" was first posted in the CrossFit forum, by Jeff Martin of Brand X CrossFit @thebrandxmethod (Ramona, CA, USA) on October 30, 2006.

This memorial workout is dedicated to Patrolman Christopher Mark Goodell of Waldwick, NJ, who died from severe head trauma on July 17, 2014, due to a collision between a truck and his stationary unmarked police car.  The 20 and 14 repetitions are for the year Mark died. His badge number was 38, hence the 38 total repetitions per round (10/10/10/8). The 5 rounds represent the 5 years he served as an officer. Mark specifically liked running and bodyweight movements.
