Barnett Newman (1905-1970), 2004, oil on canvas, 43×35 cm (© Milan Golob). American painter, born in New York. He was best known for his very large canvases, many from 6 to 9 feet high, painted from the 1940s onwards. These oftenconsistof a single strong colour, modified only by changes of direction in the brushstrokes, or bisection by one or more horizontal or vertical streaks.
