Amische quilts

Several months ago I wrote about a friend who wanted me to re-create a quilt that was made for her in the 1980's. She had used it on her bed for years and it was showing signs of wear, but she loves this quilt and couldn't bring herself to part with it. She asked if I could make another very similar to it, however (thankfully!) she didn't want the sides, just the top, because she's going to fold it and lay it at the foot of the bed, just using when needed rather than as a bedspread as this…

In the past, Amish quilters used only scraps of material left over from other sewing projects or worn out clothing to create their quilts. For this reason, the colors of the quilts matched the clothes they wore: dark, earthy tones such as green, mauve, blue, and purple. But Amish quilts have changed over the years. Now, it is common for an Amish woman to shop for fabrics specifically for quilts. They will use bright colors and patterns and create eye-catching arrangements.

This is Gail’s Curved Log Cabin quilt and she asked me to quilt feathers, any kind of feathers. I decided to do open feathers and have the ones on the beige fabric going clockwise and the ones in red fabric going counter clockwise. I matched the thread color so had a lot of thread changes as I would complete a section and then roll. The sun finally decided to shine as we’ve had lot of rain this week but we really needed so I’m not complaining as it as been so dry here.
