In my recent post about how to travel with a toddler I mentioned it’s two ends of the spectrum to try out when choosing a hotel: city center or quiet seclusion. The image I used was from our hotel we stayed at in Aberfoyle, Macdonald Forest Hills Hotel & Spa. Although Fox enjoyed the sights and sounds of the city centers we spent time in, he seemed most excited about any open spaces he could rule the roost at. The Trossachs are often referred to as the Highlands in miniature. The real beauty of the region are its richly forested lochs, with especially spectacular colours in autumn. They include Lochs Ard, Venachar, Achray and Chon, but most famous is Loch Katrine, indelibly associated with Sir Walter Scott. Scott helped to popularise the region in the nineteenth century and the Trossachs became immensely fashionable - on the itinerary of many distinguished Victorians.

Scotland is more than just kilts and haggises – as a country with a rich and ancient history and striking natural landscapes, it is a great destination for photographically-inclined travelers. Scottish landscapes are fairly diverse, with mountains, bogs, countless coastal islands, sea-side cliffs, and the occasional forest. Sweeping, epic vistas seem to be a common sight, judging by these photos.
