The America's Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy. It was awarded in 1851 by the Royal Yacht Squadron to the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) for a race around the Isle of Wight won by America. It was held by the NYYC to 1983 when it was won by Australia II ending the longest winning streak in the history of sport. Early yachts were large ships, then J-Class yachts in the 1930s, 12-metre yachts after World War II, International America’s Cup Class from 1990 to 2007 and now catamarans.
