Pencil marks are surprisingly difficult to remove from wood grain. Wiping smears them all over and sanding often seems to push the graphite further in! Easily remove future pencil marks using alcohol (no, not whisky!). I expect that a few different types of solvent might work too. Anyone tried nail polish remover?
