The Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD) as seen from the observation deck of the Carlton Centre. At 50 storeys high, this skyscraper has been Africa's tallest building since 1973. Like the CBD, it has seen better days but is now attracting more visitors.
Diagonally across Diagonal Street from the diamond building in the last shot is the "KwaZulu Muti Museum of Man and Science" which isn't a museum at all but a shop crammed from floor to ceiling with products used in "Muti" which is a type of witchcraft. My guidebook told me that it was impossible for a photograph to really show the scale of the Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga, South Africa. They were right, but this picture tells some of the story at least. One of the largest canyons on earth and easily reachable from Johannesburg, it features many viewpoints along the so-called Panorama Route. This is probably the best - looking towards the rock formation known as the "Three Rondavels" because of its similarity to traditional African…
A few hours drive from Johannesburg in eastern Mpumalanga, the Drakensburg escarpment is a justifiably popular place to visit. It was the first stop on my road trip and after staying in Graskop I went to the most famous of the many viewpoints along the edge of the valley - 'God's Window'.
