Not only did I start out my farm the way I’d seen in books on market gardening (using lots of “fabric” for mulch, plastic netting, plastic seed trays), I went all in. Year two the entire field was covered. I hate this, it still haunts me when I find a piece of it. It’s why I’m determined to show that there is another better way. When we used the fabrics (which aren’t fabric but actually plastic) my soil grew more compacted each year. Leaf litter and organic matter couldn’t accumulate throughout the year like it normally would, feeding the soil life and providing organic mulch to feed microbes, so when I’d remove the fabric in fall the soil underneath would be hard and cracking.
