The Battle of Iwo Jima: 70 year anniversary

On Feb. 23, 1945, Marines raised the American flag on the summit of Mount Suribachi after several days of fierce fighting to capture the tiny island of Iwo Jima. Though the battle would continue to rage for more than a month after that historic moment, the flag raising became a symbol of American victory in the Pacific. Today, the image of the flag raising remains one of the most iconic war photographs ever taken.
