Studio carte de visite portrait of Wigan pit brow lasses, 1860-70.
Wigan Pit Brow Lasses (Sometime in the 1860s). Women were able to be coal miners in the U.K. until 1842 when it was outlawed for women and children to work in the mines. So they moved to the equally dangerous, highly industrialized work in the pit brow, cleaning and processing the coal.
