On August 13, 1918 -- 95 years ago today -- women officially enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for the first time. Among the 305 women who signed up that day, Opha Mae Johnson (pictured below) was the first in line. It would be two more years before women would achieve the right to vote in the US.
Eileen Marie Collins (b. November 19, 1956) is a retired American astronaut and a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel. A former #military instructor and test pilot, Collins was the first female pilot and first female commander of a Space Shuttle. She was awarded several medals for her work. Col. Collins has logged 38 days 8 hours and 10 minutes in outer space. Collins retired on May 1, 2006 to pursue private interests, including service as a board member of USAA.
14-year-old, Julia Bluhm, has defeated Seventeen Magazine. 80,000 people signed Julia's online petition asking Seventeen to run unaltered photos of real girls and real beauty, not photoshopped ones. In Seventeen's August issue, the magazine's Editor in Chief announced that the magazine vows not to use Photoshop to alter the face shape and body sizes of its teen models, and that it will feature a diversity of models with different body shapes, races, and hair textures. Dorothy “Dottie” Schroeder (1928-1996) was the youngest founding member of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League at the age fifteen. After playing 12 seasons for the AAGPBL, she spent four years touring North America with an 11 woman team. Her fifteen seasons of professional baseball remain a record for a female player.
