John Brown's Fort - Originally the Fire Engine House The United States Government placed a Federal Armory and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today's West Virginia) in 1799. In October of 1859, abolitionist John Brown and a group of followers raided the arsenal. They had hoped to use the weapons to arm southern slaves and lead to a widespread slave revolt. His plan failed and John Brown was tried and hung. Today, most of the town is administered by the National Park Service.
