Long Vowels

This week we are learning about long vowel words (ones that end with silent e). Check out the rules for these words and a word sort comparing short and long vowels in the pictures below. Please review them with your student and be on the lookout for long vowel words in your daily reading!

My students love this song. It is so effective for reinforcing the silent e rule. I made pictures and word cards and a sparkly e manipulative for every word pair in the song. They love to watch this over and over!

A simple activity for introducing Silent E

Introducing "Sparkly E" and a Freebie

After hammering home short vowels for the first 94 days of school we are finally introducing...... SILENT 'E'! In our classroom he is better known as "Sparkly 'E'". He was such a hit last year that I knew he would make another appearance on my plans this year. We started off by spelling some CVC words. We added sparkly e to the end of each word to watch (and hear) the magic happen! After discovering that 'sparkly e' changes the vowel sound from short to long, we learned a poem. I found this…

silent e's job-it's already that time of year to teach this-where does the time go
