I have been making home brewed beer since 1975 and started making hard apple cider and berry wines in 1980. After moving to Alaska it was very exciting to see all of the berries that grow very well up here. Growing my own berries in Alaska was a no-brainer. In Alaska I continued with my hobby making wine from produce that I bought. My goal is to make wine out of the fruits and berries that I grow myself. Brambles are biennial plants with two types of canes: primocanes and floricanes. For fall-fruiting raspberries and blackberries, berries are harvested in August or September from 1-year-old canes called primocanes. For summer-fruiting brambles, primocanes are 1-year-old vegetative canes, and 2-year-old canes called floricanes produce the fruit. Completing the Geneva Double-Curtain Trellis System
A number of family and friends helped us construct the trellis systems needed for our two-year-old vines. More robust varieties require a stronger trellis system. The one we chose to go with is called Geneva Double-Curtain, which gives vigorous vines plenty of room to grow and lots of sun exposure.
