What is AMH? Anti-Müllerian hormone, also known as Müllerian-inhibiting hormone, is a glycoprotein hormone structurally related to inhibin and activin from the transforming growth factor beta superfamily, whose key roles are in growth differentiation and folliculogenesis. Understanding the meaning of AMH and why we recommend that anyone having fibroid removal surgery (myomectomy) with intentions of pursuing future pregnancy, should get an AMH drawn before surgery is super important.

So we’re not talking about smoking and how it affects a woman in terms of her eggs or her fertility potential. We’re also talking about what happens with the male partner in a couple. In up to 13% of patients coping with infertility, smoking has been implicated as the cause of infertility. That’s smoking cigarettes–with nicotine being the major ingredient that’s implicated in decreasing fertility, not just the nicotine content that affects fertility, but all the components of smoking.
Pelvic pain, including period-related pain, is a major cause of disability for many. Moreover, delays in getting treatment can be life-altering but do not need to be when a multidisciplinary approach is taken. Options for treatment include specific and targeted physical therapy known as pelvic floor physical therapy, targeted injections known as trigger point injections, surgery when necessary, prescription medications that do not include narcotics, targeted nutritional therapy, and more!
Did you know that it’s common for some people to experience pain and bleeding with ovulation? It’s called 𝐌𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐳, the German word for “mid-cycle”. This normal phenomenon is common and while for some people they experience it every month, for others, it only happens from time to time or they may only notice it happening when they ovulate from one specific side (Ie a specific ovary).
Wondering how long after delivering a baby before you can get pregnant again? We recommend waiting a minimum of 6 months for those who delivered vaginally and waiting a minimum of 12 months for those who delivered via Cesarean. If you’ve had 2 or more losses in your reproductive lifetime (NB: they don’t have to be back-to-back losses), we define that as 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐠𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐬 and recommend that you get an evaluation for “recurrent pregnancy loss”.

As discussed in my prior IUD video, IUDs are the most effective form of contraception, other than abstaining. IUDs act at the level of the uterus and are great long-term reversible forms of birth control. Whenever/ if ever you’re ready to start trying to conceive, you can just have your GYN provider remove it and you’re ready to start trying! There are many pain-free ways to insert an IUD at your Doctor’s office. Ask them about your options and see if an IUD might be right for you!
