John Brown daguerreotype, On Oct. hoping to start an armed slave revolt, American abolitionist John Brown led a raid on the Harpers Ferry Armory in Harpers Ferry, Virginia. John Brown Abolitionist, Harpers Ferry, Civil War Photos, Daguerreotype, African American History, American Indians, Before Us, American Civil War, People

John Brown was a radical abolitionist to say the least. Nice photograph of him prior to "his body lying moldering in the grave". Brown advocated and practiced armed insurrection as a means to abolish slavery in the United States. Executed in 1859, but his speeches at the trial captured national attention. Brown has been called "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans" and "America's first domestic terrorist."

The University of Kansas Jayhawk Historical Marker

The University of Kansas is home to a mythical bird with a fascinating history: the Jayhawk. The legendary KU mascot originated in the 1850s border war in Kansas Territory over the question of slavery. (A historical marker located in Hutchinson in Reno County, Kansas.)
