Stone path to woodland area shade garden - May 2006
I built this rock path in the wooded area of my garden in 2005 under a dense live oak tree canopy. The Kimberly Queen ferns are hardy in this area. Groundcover includes lamium 'White Nancy' and creeping thyme. I like the round knot ring on the right hand live oak tree trunk.
Spigelia marilandica
If this isn't the region's most beautiful native, then I don't know who is...any votes for Elvis or Dolly? This exquisite woodland perennial makes a dainty-looking 12" wide clump of 2' tall stalks clothed with nondescript green foliage. In late spring, Spigelia marilandica clumps are topped with dozens of stalks of spectacular up-facing, bright red, tubular flowers with a dramatically contrasting yellow center...a hummingbird favorite. Spigelia marilandica, which improves with age, is a true…

Adiantum capillus veneris Falling Waters
(aka A1FL-113) This selection of the worldwide native Adiantum capillus-veneris comes from Washington Co., Florida, about an hour west of Tallahassee. Adiantum capillus-veneris 'Falling Waters' has made a splendid patch in our garden with frond pinnae (fern leaflets) that are slightly smaller and narrower than what we typically see in other regional southern maidenhair fern forms. Our five-year-old, tardily-deciduous clumps have spread to 2' wide and so far have survived single digit…
Erythronium 'Pagoda'
A robust hybrid, 'Pagoda' has sulphur-yellow flowers with a reddish-brown ring at the center. The leaves are a beautiful bright green.

Adiantum pedatum
Without a doubt, the widespread Adiantum pedatum (Canada south to Florida) is one of our most elegant North American native ferns. The horizontal horseshoe-like wreath of foliage rests atop 18-24" tall, wiry black stems. Northern maidenhair fern thrives in moist, rich soil, but also grows well in all but the driest of woodland garden sites. The light, airy, fine texture of Adiantum pedatum fronds serves as a perfect backdrop for hostas and other bold foliage plants. In early April, this…
