This is a stunningly beautiful and rare 1970s saddle rug (most likely for a donkey or mule) from the Boujad region of Morocco. The creative pattern and design is reminiscent of a Paul Klee painting, featuring colour blocks of deep cerise pink, pale pinks, ivory, black and orange in a random checkerboard pattern with squares of random sizes. Unusually, the rug is square in shape. With fringing to one end, this is a beautiful piece, a rare find.
