"When she came there at first to tend the roses and clean things up, she had made a little garden in a corner and planted a few potatoes, just for herself." (Robinson 16) This garden represents her new life with the Reverend. She has the freedom to plant anything she wants, which makes her happy. (AP)

(Robinson 86-87) The river is a big part of Lila's life because it represents the beginning of her life with the Reverend. She decides to leave all of her old life behind her and start her new life with the Reverend as a new person. (AN)

"It was that feeling she had had walking along beside him that put the notion in her mind a day's work. It comes from being alone too much. Things matter that wouldn't if you had a regular life." (Robinson 81) This swing in the garden relates to this quote because it shows Lila's loneliness in the world even when she was married to the Reverend. In their relationship she never really felt like she could trust him, so she never really had company. (S)

"At the preacher's house she let herself in through the gate and went around the side of the house to the corner against the fence, and when she just began picking beans she heard raindrops hitting the leaves... She held out the bag to him. 'I thought you might be wanting some beans.'" (Robinson 57) Before Lila went to go meet with the Reverend, while she was waiting she picked beans from his garden and then gave them to him once he welcomed her into his home. (K)
