Greek, 225 - 175 B.C.  Gold and glass. Earrings with Nike Pendants (Getty Museum) Flying figures of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, form the main decoration of these Hellenistic gold earrings. The goddess appears with spread wings and wind-swept drapery, holding a flaming torch, in two figures that are mirror images of one another. Each tiny figure is hollow, made from two joined sheets of gold that were formed in a mold.

The penannular hoop round in section, with lion-head terminals joined to the ends by a cylindrical collar, a small beaded wire at the join, a larger beaded wire framed by plain wire behind the heads, each lion head with an incised radiating mane, the short rounded ears high on the head, the eyes bulging within the recessed sockets, the whiskers incised  3¼ in. (8.3 cm.) wide
