Leketøy som kan anses som pedagogiske ble gitt til barna lenge før begrepet “pedagogiske leketøy” noensinne ble myntet. I gamle tider måtte foreldre være kreative og lage leketøy til barna sine. Den gangen kan leketøy for gutter ha inkludert tresverd og buer og piler; leketøy som ville lære gutter å kjempe og overleve. Jenter derimot fikk leketøy som lærte dem å pleie og ta vare på ting, for eksempel dukker og tre dyrefigurer.
