The Erie Railroad's earliest history dates back to the 1830s and later in the 19th century as one of the most powerful lines. It stretched from New Jersey to Chicago and merged with the DL&W in 1960.

Dating back to the original charter of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1846, Harrisburg has long been host to the Standard Railroad of the World , beginning with the original mainline from the State Capitol, west to the city of Pittsburgh. Under the leadership of J. Edgar Thompson the PRR expanded Sou
