Here's a living room with a dark blue/green behind a charcoal sofa. If you like this room it's because it's heavily styled. Take away everything except the sofa and the wall colour, and you would not give this space a second glance.  The problem with choosing wall colours first, is now you have to run around trying to find accessories/carpets/furniture to match them. Decorate FIRST. Then choose paint colours.
