This album (muraqqaʿ), in an accordion format, was presented as a gift in 1886 to its former owner. It contains twenty-five leaves of Persian and Indian paintings and calligraphies, photographs, and European prints. The pages range in date from the eleventh century AH / seventeenth CE to the thirteenth century AH / nineteenth CE. An Ottoman Garden Grows in St. Louis
From tulips to gazebos, much about modern gardens has roots in Ottoman Turkey, where the Bakewell family of St. Louis, too, has a distant ancestor linked—if legend is to be fully believed—to the court of the sultan. That link inspired the family’s bequest of a public, historic Ottoman garden.
