nephron | Definition, Function, Structure, Diagram, & Facts

Nephron, functional unit of the kidney, the structure that actually produces urine in the process of removing waste and excess substances from the blood. There are about 1,000,000 nephrons in each human kidney. Learn more about the structure and function of nephrons in this article.

This shows a kidney and the nephron with arrows that point to specific structures within the kidney for students of anatomy to label.

Nephron again. Proximal tube: Recapture of WATER, IONS and NUTRIENTS Descending loop of Henle: reabsorption of water. Ascending loop of Henel: permeable to ions Distal tubule: reabsorption of K and NaCl Collecting duct: to the renal pelvis we go Renal Physiology, Human Anatomy And Physiology, Pa School, Medical School, Loop Of Henle, Biomedical Science, Nursing School Notes, Biology Lessons, Medical Anatomy

Nephron Physiology source source Key Points: Early Proximal Tubule: reabsorb all glucose, amino acids and most of bicarbonate, sodium, chloride, phosphate and water. Generates and secretes ammonia. Thin descending loop of Henle: passive reabsorbs water. Think Ascending Loop of Henle: actively reabsorbs Na+, K+ and Cl-. Responsible for paracellular reabsorption of Mg2+ and Ca2+. Impermeable to H2O. Early Distal Convoluted Tubule: actively reabsorb Na_ and Cl-. Collecting Tubule: reabsorb Na…

The kidneys filter about one-quarter pints) of the blood that is output by the heart daily. This blood is sent to the body's filter treatment plant, where it is purified by the ki Science Biology, Medical Science, Teaching Science, Renal Physiology, Human Anatomy And Physiology, Kidney Anatomy, Medical Anatomy, Vascular Ultrasound, Nursing School Notes

The flow of blood in the kidneys begins with the renal artery. Eventually the blood is filtered through the glomerulus, where specific substances flow into the capsule. The afferent (approaching) arteriole is larger than the efferent (exiting) arteriole which helps maintain a high pressure in the glomerulus to increase GFR. Blood flows from efferent arterioles into either vasa recta (juxtamedullary nephron) or peritubular capillaries (cortical nephron). Blood leaves via the renal vein.
