We dont know how the next few days will unfold. We cant predict the future. Uncertainty is unsettling and theres a natural temptation to forecast to make guesses and predictions to self-soothe against the uncertainty. We do this with elections we do this with the stock market we even do this with sports scores. Wed rather forecast and prognosticate than live with the sinking dread of uncertainty. But the reality is that not only are we unable to predict the future were also unable to fully…

I knew youve heard this a bazillion times today but for the bazillionth-and-one time: Get off your couch and go vote. Dont sit around complaining and dont sit around getting sucked into useless social media comment wars. Instead do something thats actually constructive. Vote. Less screen time more action. Less complaining more doing. Yes its cold outside. Its getting dark. Its easy to question if your actions will make a difference. It will. You have more power than you realize. And it…

Its a stressful day for everyone so here are 7 quick tips to restore sanity: 1 Breathe. Do it right now; take five slow breaths. 2 Smile at someone you dont know. And if youre isolated in your home smile at yourself in the mirror. 3 Eat carbs. Seriously its a mood booster. 4 Soak in an Epsom salt bath. If you dont have time you can put your feet in Epsom salts while youre working from home even for 5-10 minutes. 5 Vote. Volunteer. Take action. Its more productive and anxiety-relieving than a…

Happy November! Its the start of gratitude month the month of giving thanks no matter how insanely effing tough this year has been for everyone. The month of focusing on the abundance in our lives rather than everything we (validly) feel is lacking. Yeah this year has sucked for just about errryone. But at least one a week I have the thought: thank gawd this happened in the era of high-speed home internet. Can you imagine the shutdown of 2020 with the technology of 1989? Yikes. So Im…

Not to get too philosophical here but Halloween is a time to reinvent yourself. Change. Try on being someone or something new. Reinvent yourself. Youre not bound by who you were. You create who you are.

My favorite part of Halloween as a kid (besides the candy) were ghost stories. I read Goosebumps all year long and read piles of books about mysteries and haunted houses (anyone else remember The Babysitters Club Mystery series?!) but Halloween was the season for creepy stories of ghouls and goblins told by my elementary school librarian as we the kids huddled in a slightly darkened room. She told us stories of magic and witchcraft and graveyards and hauntings and as kids our imagination…

Some members of the financial independence retire early (FIRE) community make the mistake of optimizing for finances but not for life. Sure one of the great things about the FIRE community is the enthusiasm for living a life that is efficient. But that can cross over into an unhealthy obsession when every decision starts with the question How do I reduce the cost? rather than How do I amplify the benefit? or How do I find the optimal value? Theres a great quote from Oscar Wilde where he says…

Two seemingly-contradictory ideas can be true simultaneously: A younger version of yourself would love and admire The You of Today because you've come so far ... ... and yet you're not ready to rest on your laurels. You see how much further you could go how much more you could be and do. Yes you've come a long way but you're not done yet. That's progress without complacency. ____________________________ There are times when taking a damn break is the best thing you could do for yourself…

That statement came from behavioral economist Dr. Dan Ariely one of our former podcast guests. He spent his life obsessed with the idea that we repeatedly and predictably make the wrong decisions. He says checking accounts are a huge part of our money problems. We cram all of our money into this one account where it sits as a gigantic commingled mess. Everything that we need to pay for -- from our rent/mortgage to our clothes and restaurant meals to our groceries and utilities -- all sits in…

My reading list from 2020 -- here's a summary of five excellent books that I've either read or listened to (in audiobook form) this year along with commentary to help you figure out whether or not you'd be into it. ________ The Honest Truth About Dishonesty by Dan Ariely -- We lie to ourselves constantly without realizing it. Behavioral economist Dan Ariely illustrates how we can be self-deceptive and why we shouldn't believe everything we think. Personality Isn't Permanent by Benjamin Hardy…

You're in this for the long haul. Don't get too excited about the good times; don't get too bummed out about the bad times. Invest at routine intervals and ignore the performance of your portfolio. Your balance only matters when you withdraw (and that's not for a decade or more) ... everything else is just noise. #longterminvestor #investing #investor #longtermthinking #invest #indexfunds #buyandhold #boglehead #firemovement

On March 12 2020 the market endured its worst one-day drop since October 1987. The next day it experienced one of the biggest single-day leaps in history. Stocks are shaky again right now. Up down up. It looks like the market will remain shaky for the foreseeable future and especially until November. Theres a ton of uncertainty and uncertainty leads to volatility. Ignore it. Dont worry about what the market is doing. Its just noise. Keep your head down and focus on the long-term. The market…
