Saul Leiter, Paris, 2008 -by Martine Franck [+] from Magnum Photos
Photographer and painter Saul Leiter's work was a major contribution to what came to be known as the New York School. The son of a Talmud scholar, Leiter studied to become a rabbi but left theology for the arts. His abstracted forms and radically innovative compositions have a painterly quality that stands out among the work of his New York School contemporaries.
