Re-use old wine corks to make chess pieces. Glue coins to the bottoms to help keep corks upright. Use coins also to designate the various pieces (i.e. pennies=pawns, dimes=bishops, quarters=kings, etc.) get creative with car wash coins or Mexican Pesos. I used electrical tape to identify dark pieces.
