Make your own Carpet Shampoo 1 cup oxiclean 1 cup febreeze 1 cup distilled white vinegar This homemade versions work fabulously! Pour contents into shampooer tub and mix with hot water to fill tub completely. This will not only clean your carpets it will also deodorize. It will smell slightly of vinegar until the carpet is dry. Be sure to test spot with the solution just to be safe, however this should be safe for ALL carpets.
~DIY carpet cleaner for machines~ I just made a gallon of this carpet cleaner. Add 1/4 cup vinegar, 4 tbsp dish soap, 4 tbsp softener and 1/4 cup peroxide in a measuring cup. Stir it. Then add it to an almost full gallon of warm water. Then slowly add warm water to top it off. Gently shake the jug to mix, avoid suds and bubbles. Add to the cleaning compartment like you would normal cleaning solution. I made it for pennies. It worked great on my carpets and smells good too.
How to Clean Stubborn Carpet Stains with an Iron and Vinegar/Water Solution: Spray the spot with a solution of 1 part vinegar with 2 parts water. Lay a damp rag over the spot. Iron on the steam setting for about 30 seconds. If the stain is really stubborn, repeat the steps.
For carpets and upholstery - the best homemade solutions (apply each with a towel): Dish soap: ¼ teaspoon nonbleach product (such as Dawn, Joy, or clear Ivory) plus 1 cup water. Vinegar: 1 part white vinegar, 1 part water. Ammonia: 1 tablespoon clear household formula plus 1 cup water. Hydrogen peroxide: ½ cup plus 1 teaspoon household ammonia. (test on an inconspicuous spot first.)

Usea mix of 1 cup vinegar + 1 cup baking soda + a few squirts of dish soap in place of carpet cleaner shampoo. I pretreat any spots with oxyclean laundry spray. I have found that my homemade solution works better than commercial bought plus it doesn't leave residue in my carpets and is nontoxic and green. Can also add essential oils for scent.
