Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out. I seem to forget this simple fact. It is easy to skip the little things but they matter.

We are mildly obsessed with the 80's classic The Karate Kid over here.  In Karate Kid the clear villains "Cobra Kai" (obviously) have a motto that indoctrinates their mind and influences their behavior. They say "strike first, strike hard, no mercy". So Jalea and her husband redeemed that slogan to fit our communication creed at 212 "communicate early, communicate often, no misunderstandings." We teach this to adults, we teach it to parents and to kids and we practice it daily in our homes.

Listening to why your child chose not to follow directions or chose to hit or yell does not mean you agree with their behavior.  It does not mean you are going to neglect their consequences. It simply means you took the time to connect with them in their big feels.  The root word for discipline is to disciple or to "teach" and our greatest teachers always took the time to make great connections.
